How shared resource use management through reciprocal grazing agreements can increase resilience?
Description: This technical brief focuses on approaches and practices used among communities that support dialogue and negotiation as pre-requisite for creating disaster-resilient communities. Such practices include the reciprocal resource agreements that are a common feature in pastoralist customary traditions. By strengthening traditional reciprocal grazing agreements it is possible to enhance feasible climate change adaptation practices among the pastoral communities who are highly affected. This is the focus of VSF Germany, as part of a consortium with VSF Switzerland and VSF Belgium.

Pastoral community-based early warning systems: Why don’t we understand them?
Description: This technical brief looks at how Community-based early warning systems (CbEWS) are essential in empowering communities to prepare for and confront natural hazards (UN-ISDR, nd). Good lessons have been learned from their use in areas prone to sudden onset disasters, however in pastoralist communities of the Horn of Africa where drought has a slow onset, disaster is a major hazard and the lessons learned on CbEWS are far fewer.
